The practical rule is to prefer the move that clears the most pieces. A single swipe can fuse several pairs at once, and the move that merges most buys you the most breathing room. - Letting the big piece wander. A large tile in the middle chops the board in half. Keep it cornered and everything else has room to sort itself out.
